Nervous About Needles? Acupuncture Can Be More Gentle Than You Think.

Calm relaxing acupuncture treatment room at Acupuncture Sanctuary in Dunsborough

Many people are surprised to learn that one of the most common things I hear before a first treatment is:

“I’m terrified of needles.”

Sometimes people arrive feeling visibly anxious, apologising repeatedly, or convinced they won’t be able to go through with treatment at all.

And honestly, that’s completely okay.

A Gentle, Gradual Approach

Recently, a lovely client came in feeling extremely nervous about acupuncture. Before we even began, we spent time simply slowing things down.

We talked.

She held one of the tiny acupuncture needles in her hand.

Looked at it closely.

Touched it gently against her skin.

Asked questions.

No pressure. No rushing.

Eventually, we decided to try just one very small needle.

The moment it went in, we both paused… she looked completely confused… and then burst out laughing.

“Wait… THAT was it?!”

She hardly felt anything. After that, it was easy.

By the end of the session, we were both laughing about how much anticipation and fear had built up beforehand.

Acupuncture Doesn’t Have to Feel Intimidating

Many people are surprised by how gentle acupuncture can feel, especially when treatments are tailored carefully and approached gradually.

In clinic, I often work very gently, sometimes using only a small number of needles depending on the person and what feels appropriate for them.

For some people, simply having a calm, supportive experience and realising they can relax is a huge part of the process.

It’s Okay to Take Things Slowly

If you’ve been curious about acupuncture but feel nervous about needles, you’re not alone. Treatments can always be approached at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Sometimes the biggest step is simply walking through the door.
